In one of the most shocking moves of the recent years, reports came up in Sydney Morning Herald on the 3rd February 2009 that the retailers in Australia would no more be allowed selling online games not classified by the Classification Board of Australia.
One of the major victims of the move would be the World of Warcraft or wow besides many others.

These games do not contain single layer experience and therefore cannot be classified. Prior to these move online games were considered as social experience beyond the scope of the traditional classification. But now the Australian authorities want it to be changed.

Most of the MMO’s or Massive Multiplayer Online games do not carry any classification. The reason is that it is near impossible to rate the interactions online. The declaration that Classification Enforcement Acts like that put in place by New South Wales prohibits sell of unclassified games.

On the other hand the Interactive Entertainment Association believes firmly that games that do not have single player portions needs to be exempted from carrying the ratings.

Sell of unclassified online games now becomes a criminal act in Australia. The new legislation covers all online games including multi player games the same way. Penalties could be in the range of $1100 to $11,000 for violation of the legislation. Conversely there could be imprisonment for 12 months.
