Such a big event leads to the analysis of the sales for Wrath of The Lich King by Mike Hickey from Janco Partners.

According to the analyst, Wrath of The Lich King will break the previous expansion, Burning Crusade record by a whopping 5 million of sales. Burning Crusade was sold 3.5 millions copies in just within a month. This prediction is based on the release of Northrend expansion. As such, the numbers will almost double the previous sale, and in turn create a new record.

Even though this is just a general analysis. However, the possibility is high to achieve such a huge number. After all, with more than 11 millions of players worldwide, if only 1/4 of the players decided to get the expansion, we can expect as many as 2.75 millions of sales. That is a huge number as well.
