And my guess is that Patch is at least 2 months away since 3.2 only just came out. So once the next Patch comes out (3.3, assuming it allows people to battle the Lich King), they will give people 2-3 months to play it, before releasing a patch to kick off the expansion, with the expansion probably following 6-8 weeks afterwards. This time gives them to load Cataclysm onto Test Severs to work out bugs in the code, which from my reading on the net hasn't happened yet. And since the Code isn't in any sort of Beta testing, it will be a while.
